Art & Design at Coal Clough Academy encourages students to think creatively. It encourages pupils to learn new skills and techniques, so that when they have great ideas, they are able to ‘realise’ their imaginings, and feel happy with the results.

Art encourages young people to be aware of everything around them; to appreciate colour, texture, shapes, images, objects and life. To study and record, with accuracy, how something looks or fits together, is both a challenge and a reward. Knowing which colours will match, or clash, can inform your dress code and help create the perfect décor and furnishings. Creating something unique, from your own imagination is a source of fulfilment & nurtures self esteem.

The Art Department at Coal Clough Academy aims to encourage and promote all aspects of drawing and visual recording. The exploration and experimentation of different materials and techniques is the focus for Key Stage 3 so that students become familiar with the scope of the media, and develop skills and techniques that they can practice, explore & use, then apply with confidence in Key Stage 4 and when studying for GCSE qualifications.

Every project in Key Stage 3 includes an aspect or link to art, design or craft history, or culture. This can set the theme for projects but also increases the students’ knowledge and awareness of art and creativity, not only in Britain, but across the whole world! It creates good practice for future studies, as this is a crucial element & must be explicit in GCSE studies.

We encourage students to consider their future opportunities (beyond school) and aim to make them aware of careers and options they might not have heard of, let alone considered as a rewarding and engaging career. Each project will involve research & discussions about the broad sphere of work possibilities within art, design and craft.
