Wider Opportunities at Coal Clough Academy

We truly believe in a holistic approach to education at Coal Clough Academy, encouraging and inspiring all our students to explore a wide range of extra-curricular interests and helping them to develop their individuality, their way.

Our school ethos aims to produce individuals who are well-rounded and able to meet the challenges of life and feel strongly that personal development is greatly enhanced by the challenge of a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme across all sections of the school.

We are proud to offer an extensive extra-curricular programme that provides opportunities for every individual to flourish. The programme offers a large number of wider opportunities for our pupils they would not otherwise receive. Taking into account the schools context, we also offer a number of before school, lunch and afterschool activities for our pupils.

At Key Stage 4, students deepen knowledge and understanding, extend and rehearse skills, and further explore attitudes, values and attributes acquired during Key Stage 3. PSHE education reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on greater responsibility for themselves and others.

Overview of Activities offered at Coal Clough Academy

Activity  Overview Year Group
BFC Character Development  The group sessions focus on inspiring learners to develop their personal skills and positive attitudes to succeed in and out of education. The focus will be on skills/areas such as creativity, staying positive, aiming high, leadership, teamwork, reliability, integrity and being reflective. All year groups
BFC Literacy Game Changers  A reading programme designed to raise reading levels amongst students, improve their comprehension skills and enhance their interest towards reading for pleasure. The sessions also give an opportunity to participate in team building activities related to sport and fitness. All year groups
BFC Mentoring Mentoring through the Premier League Inspires programme allows students to have access to the support they need to reach their full potential. The programme uses a positive role model approach to improve students’ outlook towards education and life. The mentoring process aims to help students to identify and achieve their goals. Together, the mentor and student will break down their goals into manageable steps so that they can be achieved, reflecting on what is going well and what else can be done to achieve them along the way. All year groups
Burnley Youth Theatre  Burnley Youth Theatre produces and delivers a programme with a wide range of creative activities, productions and events to engage children, young people and families. Staff work with students at Coal Clough Academy in lots of different ways to help extend their cultural capital. Yr10/11

JSA Equine Therapy  Equine and Animal Assisted Therapy utilises a fundamentally non-directive therapeutic model. A relationship of trust develops between the student and their chosen horse through a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Horses are herd animals with a pronounced flight instinct, and will pick up on a student’s stress and discomfort very quickly. Their deep sense of empathy causes the horses to want to be with their human companions, and help them to resolve emotional distress. This can be a great reflection tool for students in considering the non-verbal messages and body language they are communicating. All year groups
Music & Singing Club  To have fun and experiment with different instruments whilst learning some new skills. The main aims of the sessions can vary depending on the needs of the student, ranging from increasing confidence and independent working to improving social skills and providing them with a release of their emotions.
